Triple blow puts India on backfoot

Danger bells sounded early on in the innings as India lost the third wicket in the form of Suresh Raina. With Sri Lanka taking wickets at regular intervals, Rohit Sharma arrived on the crease with the Indian scorecard reading a dismal 36 runs for the loss of three wickets at the end of 12 overs.

Earlier, Mahela Jayawardene dropped a rare opportunity in the slips on the last ball of the tenth over, Yuvraj Singh mistimed a delivery and would have added to India’s woes if the catch was taken cleanly.

Prior to this, Virat Kohli was trapped plumb in front of the wicket by Nuwan Kulasekara. The batsman departed after scoring 12 runs.

The visitors received the first jolt of the morning as opener Gautam Gambhir was clean bowled by veteran pacer Chaminda Vaas for a duck. He was bamboozled by a straighter delivery that moved a bit in the air. With the first wicket down with no runs on the board, Sri Lanka made an emphatic start to the ODI series. Earlier in the morning, India skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and elected to bat. The team composition had a change from the expected as Delhi blaster Virender Sehwag had to pull out due to an ankle injury. He was replaced by Virat Kohli.
