Surrey Keen To Snatch Up Shoaib

Surrey are hoping to sign Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar to help their fight against relegation over the next month.

Currently bottom of the LV County Championship Division One table by 18 points with only three matches to play, Surrey are strong favourites to be one of the two teams to go down.

But cricket manager Alan Butcher is planning to have Shoaib available in time for next week's crunch match against title-chasing Kent at Canterbury.

"We have made contact, we have spoken with him. We are just waiting to see whether it's possible," said Butcher.

"We've got three matches left and we need something to happen."

One potential snag is legal documentation which requires all overseas players to spend at least three weeks in this country.

Shoaib, 33, is hoping to press his claims for a recall to the Pakistan team, with his five-year ban following altercations with the national board recently rescinded.

In those circumstances, Surrey hope his prospective spell at The Oval may prove mutually beneficial.

"They [overseas players] have to be here for a period of 21 days," Butcher confirmed.

"But he is keen. He's desperate to get back into the Pakistan side and is hoping this could be a springboard to do that.

"If it does go through, we hope it could be of great benefit to us all."

Shoaib - who played the last of his 46 Tests last December, shortly after his final one-day international - was recalled to the Pakistan squad for the Champions Trophy, which should have taken place next month but has been postponed because of security concerns.

He has previously played for Worcestershire and Durham and also signed for Nottinghamshire but never made it onto the pitch.

Surrey already have Australian pace bowler Matt Nicholson registered as an overseas player, and it seems he will have to make way if the Shoaib signing goes through.

Moin Wants ICL Rebels Back For Pakistan

Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan hopes the Pakistan Cricket Board will "be more flexible" and allow players participating in the rebel Indian Cricket League to return to the national team.

Moin hopes an overhaul at the top of the game in Pakistan, with PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf leaving his post following the resignation of Pervez Musharraf as the country's president, will result in players competing in the ICL - which has not been approved by the International Cricket Council - earning international recalls.

The likes of former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq and Abdul Razzaq were initially banned from all international cricket after featuring for Lahore Badshahs, but after the England and Wales Cricket Board lifted a similar restriction in county cricket, Moin expressed hope the PCB would overturn the suspensions.

"All players featuring in the ICL are professional cricketers and they are not breaking any law," Moin was quoted as saying in The News.

"They are just earning their livelihood, so why ban them? I hope the new set-up will be more flexible on the issue."

Flintoff stars in England romp

Andrew Flintoff starred with bat and ball as England won a rain-affected fourth one-day international against South Africa by seven wickets at Lord's.

England, set a revised target of 137 to win off 20 overs after rain disrupted South Africa's innings at 6-183 in 32.1 overs, made it with 14 balls to spare with Kevin Pietersen making 40 and Owais Shah 44 not out.

Flintoff came in and smashed a rapid 31 off 12 deliveries to add to his 3-21 with the ball.

Pietersen was out with 44 still needed but he and Shah had upped the tempo of England's run chase by hitting a Jacques Kallis over for 20.

The England captain eventually holed out in the deep after hitting five fours and a six before Flintoff came in and took the game away from South Africa and give England a 4-0 lead in the series.

Pietersen said: "The recalculation probably worked in our favour but we batted really well. But I asked the boys to do a job and they have done it today. Winning becomes a habit and when you start winning game after game after game you learn how to win.

"Andrew is playing some of the best cricket of his career.''

In the gathering gloom, Shah, who started off slowly, paced his innings to perfection to get England home while Flintoff, seemingly unaffected by the light, hit the South Africa bowling to all parts.

Pietersen added: "I know Owais would come good. He proved what a good player he is. He delivered today and played some fantastic shots.''

Kallis said: "The dressing room is down - we pride ourselves on our results. But there are some positives to take out today, we are learning from our mistakes and we have some young players learning about international cricket.

"Flintoff has been unbelievable. He has proved he is a good player and he adds balance to the England side. He is a world-class performer.''

Herschelle Gibbs, 34 and no longer in the Test side, showed he remains a force in one-day international cricket with his 36th one-day half century after South Africa were put into bat in gloomy conditions by Pietersen.

The opener was eyeing a 21st one-day century when he was bowled off his pads by Stuart Broad having faced 75 balls and hit five fours for his 74.

Gibbs and Hashim Amla put on 66 for the first wicket with Amla accelerating after the rain break when he tucked into Steve Harmison and took four fours of the quick bowler in one over.

At this stage, South Africa were going at more than six an over but Amla's innings was cut short when he was run out by Owais Shah. Pietersen's bowlers were not firing on all cylinders as they had at Trent Bridge when South Africa were bundled out for 83 and Harmison was taken out of the attack after conceding 35 runs in four overs but Flintoff was reliable as ever.

A 5-0 whitewash of South Africa - the final match is in Cardiff on Thursday (EST) - would take England to second in the ICC one-day world rankings behind Australia.

Symonds given month to commit

Andrew Symonds has under a month to pledge his allegiance to Australian cricket and safeguard his passage to the place that commands commitment most — India.

Officials of Cricket Australia, Cricket Queensland and the players' union have already begun devising a strategy on how best to assist Symonds, who on Saturday was sent home for lacking commitment to his team.

The all-rounder was fishing when he should have been attending a compulsory team meeting.

Symonds, 33, was yesterday considering his future after his latest disciplinary lapse brought into question whether he could put the team first or accept his international career was over.

His manager Matt Fearon said Symonds wanted to resume playing, but was unsure whether he would be available for the Test tour of India, which departs late next month. The touring squad could be selected as early as mid-September.

"Andrew's going to take some time to reflect on what's happened," Fearon told Cricinfo.

"He's still committed to playing cricket at the highest level.

"How he goes about doing that and how it plays out I don't know. Whether it means India I don't know."

But Symonds' teammates are desperate to have him available for the high-profile Test series.

Batsman Mike Hussey said the all-rounder was missed in Saturday's win over Bangladesh in the opening one-dayer and would be invaluable in a gruelling series on the subcontinent.

"He's had success there and is a very good player of spin, and that is important," Hussey said.

Symonds' latest indiscretion disappointed his two greatest allies — captain Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke, the acting skipper in Darwin — and they, along with coach Tim Nielsen, decided enough was enough.

The leadership group had tired of several recent incidents, which showed Symonds put himself first.

Fellow all-rounder Shane Watson, who missed Saturday's match because he was still feeling the effects of calf soreness and the toe he broke in the West Indies, is expected to be fit for Wednesday's second game.

Flintoff Takes Top Spot

Andrew Flintoff's role in England's NatWest Series victory over South Africa has taken him to the top of the ICC rankings for all-rounders.

Flintoff has jumped six places on the back of his 156 runs and seven wickets in a series England have already won by opening up a 3-0 lead with only two matches to play.

England's success has also resulted in notable progress for captain Kevin Pietersen and seamer Stuart Broad.

Broad is up to a career-high fourth among the bowlers after his maiden five-wicket haul at Trent Bridge this week, while Pietersen is now seventh in the batting rankings.

While England are up to fourth in the team table and can go above South Africa into a best-ever second should they complete a whitewash, their opponents are on the slide, collectively and individually.

Captain Graeme Smith, who will play no further part in the series due to his elbow injury, has been deposed at the top of the batting rankings by India's Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been in top form against Sri Lanka.

England opener Ian Bell is up seven places to 18th, having dominated a century opening stand with Matt Prior in the 126-run win at The Oval on Friday.

South Africa's AB Villiers has dropped out of the top 10, to 14th, after a poor NatWest Series so far.

Aussies thrash Bangladesh

Australia ensured history didn't repeat as they overcame another Andrew Symonds controversy to thrash Bangladesh by 180 runs in the first one-day match at TIO Stadium in Darwin.

The home side recovered from the distraction of having Symonds again pulled out of the match for disciplinary issues – just as he was in Cardiff in 2005 – to post a commanding 8-254 on a slowish wicket after being sent in.

They then wrapped up an imposing victory by skittling the tourists for 74 in 27.4 overs thanks to some excellent bowling and several dreadful shots by the Tigers' over-awed batsmen.

The victory was a significant one for Mike Hussey and Michael Clarke, the only two members of the side who were part of the embarrassing defeat to Bangladesh in the Welsh capital after Symonds showed up at the ground drunk.

Hussey's superb 85 from 87 balls bankrolled Australia's innings and earned him the man-of-the-match award, while Clarke sealed his first one-day win as acting skipper on home soil with the final catch of the match.

Clarke was forced to confront one of the less joyous parts of leading the team – he is doing so in Ricky Ponting's absence after wrist surgery – by deciding to send Symonds home after he missed a compulsory team meeting because he was fishing.

Even without Ponting, Symonds, Matthew Hayden and Brett Lee, it was clear Australia were able to exert their aura over their opponent.

"I'll be disappointed if we don't because our performances have been fantastic, especially in one-day cricket," Clarke said.

"We beat the West Indies 5-0 and we've come here and won convincingly today.

"We've got a fantastic squad, we've got so much talent around Australia and it doesn't matter who we play – every time we walk out to play for Australia we expect to win."

Opener Shaun Marsh also retained his composure with an elegant 76 in his first international innings on home soil, before Hussey provided the aggression in Symonds' absence, smashing three fours and a six off the 48th over. In reply, Bangladesh were on the back foot from the fourth over, when Stuart Clark first struck.

Any thoughts of another upset were then dashed when Mitchell Johnson removed the visitors' two best batsmen, Tamim Iqbal and captain Mohammad Ashraful, in successive overs to have the tourists 3-33 in the 11th over.

Highlighting a series of poor shots, Iqbal (21) scooped a rising delivery to Brett Geeves at third man, while Ashraful made a mess of a ball he should have defended and was leg before for 5.

Johnson finished with 2-10, Geeves took 2-11 in his one-day international debut and leg spinner Cameron White cashed in with a career-best 3-5.

Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons said the pre-meditated and poor shots proved the tourists were not ready for the challenge, by forgetting to remain patient.

"It changes every day for our boys, they can be wonderful with that minimal footwork and shot-playing, but they can also be ordinary," Siddons said.

"It's more the selection of shot.

"I think the occasion was too big for them.

"The people back home have built up this series a lot and the players felt that a bit today. It looked like they weren't up to it mentally."

Bangladesh's score was their lowest in a one-day international, surpassing the 76 against India in 2003.

Kevin Pietersen relishes chance to make Proteas suffer

He has invigorated England's top-order batting in one-day cricket, or at least begun the lengthy process.

England's opening pair of Ian Bell and Matt Prior go into the fourth international at Lord's with partnerships of 77, 85 unbeaten, and 101 behind them. Thanks to their latest stand, at the Oval on Friday, England made their second-highest score in the 20 overs of power-play, 126 for one wicket: a perfect springboard which allowed them to mini-collapse yet still post almost 300.

Powerplays were introduced in early July 2005 to give batsmen 20 overs of trashing the bowling instead of 15. But, until now, England have treated this period of fielding restrictions as an opportunity to get their knickers in a twist. They have scored only a few runs less than their opponents, but they have lost more wickets, especially abroad – and it has led to England getting bowled out in 30 of their last 64 internationals against the top-eight teams. But on Saturday Pietersen revealed his clear-sightedness and cricket brain when he enunciated his policy on powerplays: "I don't believe in pinch-hitters – I think they work 20 per cent of the time. We've got guys in the top eight who hit cricket shots. We don't have to go aerial, just play decent cricket shots."

He added: "One of our jobs taking over was to get the best out of the players, and I want the lads to keep expressing themselves and playing with no fear."

He has had a liberating effect. Bell and Prior used their feet to upset South Africa's new-ball bowlers on Friday, admittedly on an Oval belter – and both went 'aerial' in hitting straight sixes.

Pietersen wants himself and his players to improve with every day of playing or practising – "that's the only way to be happy as a person" – and abhors the fact that "there is a lot of mediocrity that people settle for in county cricket". The room for improvement which Bell, Prior and Owais Shah have is to "go on" to score an individual hundred: and South Africa are there for the taking because their one-day team, now their captain Graeme Smith has been injured, consists either of players who are too inexperienced or who are past it.

Pietersen rates his bowling attack as the best he has seen in England's one-day side. Not so his batting line-up – not yet. "To get Tres [Marcus Trescothick] back in the team would be massive, but he's got his reasons etcetera and that's it." By contrast, Steve Harmison, in making his England return, has "got the full support of his family".

The new captain's next challenge is to beat South Africa 5-0 and instil some ruthlessness into England's cricket – in effect, for the first time. In the Ashes Test series, England have never beaten Australia 5-0, or even 4-0; in one-day cricket the only team they have beaten 5-0 is Zimbabwe. Taking the collective foot off opponents' throats has been a characteristic of England's cricket through the ages.

And if anybody is going to bring about this cultural shift, it could be the man from Pietermaritzburg who grew up competing with three brothers: "As a kid I always wanted to be the best," Pietersen said. "Driving my car now I don't like losing at the lights."

England did not practise on Saturday. One of the major changes in tone which Pietersen has effected is that his team celebrate every victory in style. It is safe to assume that when he and Peter Moores talked before Pietersen accepted the job, the captain made this plain to the coach. As Harmison said earlier this week about the regime on England's tour of New Zealand: "It was very intense."

Pietersen has focused on better cricket, not harder training.

He is still human, though. He looked back on his first game as captain two months ago, when Paul Collingwood was banned and he stood in for the final international against New Zealand at Lord's; and he admitted he had then erred.

"I took it a bit too seriously. I let it affect me as a person. I was really unsure about certain things and I put so much pressure on myself. Since taking over I've told myself to trust myself. I think I tried a bit too hard."

With that he reverted to talking about his England team-mates as "absolute superstars" – with the obvious implication, of course. But hey, for now, why not?

Kulasekara, Mendis fire Sri Lanka to consolation win

Nuwan Kulasekara wrecked India's top order with a career-best haul of 4-40 to bowl Sri Lanka to a consolation 112-run victory in the fifth and final one-day international here yesterday.

India, who already had a winning 3-1 lead, were shot out for 103 chasing a rain-revised target of 216 off 44 overs under lights. They clinched the series 3-2.

It was India's third-lowest total against Sri Lanka in one-dayers. Teenager Virat Kohli was the top scorer with 31 in a brittle batting performance.

New-ball bowler Kulasekara was superbly backed by unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis, who finished with 4-10 off 4.3 overs.

"It was a good way to finish the series, but the Indians played well and deserved to win it," said Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene.

"Credit goes to the boys for the way we came back. We kept making mistakes through the series. We were not consistent in the batting department."

Man-of-the-match Kulasekara dismissed Kohli, Gautam Gambhir (11), Suresh Raina (10) and Rohit Sharma (three) in his sharp opening spell to build on Thilan Thushara's impressive maiden half-century under pressure.

Sri Lanka were struggling at 133-6 before Thushara (54 not out) and Jehan Mubarak (47 not out) added 94 off 78 balls for the seventh wicket with hard and clean hitting to help their team reach a competitive total on a slow pitch.

The hosts hardly felt the absence of main spinner Muttiah Muralitharan and seamer Chaminda Vaas as Kulasekara and Mendis did the job. Muralitharan and Vaas were rested.

"It was good to win the series with a game to spare," said India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who was named man of the series for scoring 193 runs in five matches.

"These tracks are said to be slow, but the bounce has improved over the last few years. I am happy with the way our batsmen have played the spin. It was important to keep the strike rotating and our batsmen did that well."

Kulasekara ended India's early flourish when he had Gambhir caught by wicket-keeper Kumar Sangakkara. Gambhir added 38 for the opening wicket with Kohli.

The 19-year-old Kohli batted fluently, once pulling Kulasekara for a six. He fell just when he looked well-set, trapped leg-before playing across the line.

Kulasekara got a big wicket when he dismissed in-form Raina, who mistimed a pull to be caught by Dilhara Fernando at mid-off.

The seamer then returned after a rain interruption to trap Sharma leg-before to reduce the tourists to 76-4.

Sri Lanka virtually wrapped up the match when out-of-form Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni fell in the space of six runs to leave their team wobbling at 85-6.

Yuvraj inside-edged a Mendis delivery on to his stumps to finish the series with just 72 runs in five matches, while Dhoni was bowled by paceman Fernando, who finished with 2-24.

The hosts earlier plundered 84 in the last 10 overs, thanks to Thushara's brisk 46-ball knock containing six fours.

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha (2-28) and seamer Irfan Pathan (2-52) raised India's hopes of restricting Sri Lanka to a modest total before Thushara and Mubarak rallied their side.

Pathan ended Sri Lanka's recovery when he removed well-set Mahela Udawatte (43) and opener Malinda Warnapura (30) in the space of four deliveries.

Udawatte and Warnapura batted sensibly to add 77 for the second wicket after the dismissal of veteran opener Sanath Jayasuriya (one) in seamer Zaheer Khan's first over.

Ojha kept a tidy line and length, removing Jayawardene (12) and Chamara Kapugedera (26) in the process.

Jayawardene, who won the first toss of the series, was held in the covers by Yuvraj, and Kapugedera was caught in the deep by Rudra Pratap Singh while going for a big shot.

Rudra Pratap also claimed a wicket when he had Sangakkara (one) caught by Gambhir at first slip. Sangakkara could make just 37 runs in five matches.

England clinch series in style

England clinched the NatWest Series with another dominant performance in a 126-run victory over South Africa at The Oval.

Samit Patel finished with five wickets as the tourists were shot out for just 170 in just 42.4 overs in persuit of England's total of 296-7, inspired by another well-timed knock from Andrew Flintoff.

Under the captaincy of Kevin Pietersen, England have now won all three of their completed one-day internationals - they had an ODI against Scotland washed-out - and the fourth Test at the end of the series against South Africa.

They lead the NatWest Series 3-0 with two matches to play, at Lord's on Sunday and Cardiff on Wednesday.

South Africa never got going in their run-chase, only Hashim Amla making any significant contribution (46 from 59 balls) after being brought in to replace injured captain Graeme Smith.

Spinner Patel continued his impressive start to international cricket adding 5-41 to his earlier 31 from 33 balls, while Flintoff returned figures of 2-33.

The big all-rounder had earlier top-scored with 78 not out from 77 balls, although England looked set for a much higher total after they were given a fine start by Ian Bell and Matt Prior.

Bell scored 73 off 77 balls, putting on 101 for the first wicket with Prior (33), England reaching 50 in less than eight overs and passing the hundred-mark immediately after the second powerplay.

Bell's departure started a top-order collapse, Owais Shah (23) and captain Pietersen (5) both falling to Jacques Kallis in quick succession for the addition of just 11 runs.

Their demise brought Flintoff to the crease and the all-rounder produced some punishing strokes with a variety of batting partners.

Former England one-day captain Paul Collingwood (14) briefly kept him company until he edged a Johan Botha delivery to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher.

Flintoff then enjoyed a 74-run partnership with Patel before Luke Wright added a quick-fire 17 at the close.

Symonds sent home from Darwin

Australia all-rounder Andrew Symonds will be sent home from Darwin and will not play in the one-day cricket series against Bangladesh.

Cricket Australia (CA) said the team's leadership group had recommended that Symonds, 33, be sent home.

He will not play in the first match at TIO Stadium.

A team spokesman would not outline the exact reasons why, but there is speculation the penalty is related to a discipline breach.

It is just over three years since Symonds went on a drinking binge the night before a match against Bangladesh, which earned him a two-game suspension and nearly resulted in him being sent home from the 2005 Ashes tour.

Another disciplinary breach will not go down well with the Australian team given acting captain Michael Clarke just spoke of the need to never take any opposition team for granted.

Australia's selectors will meet to discuss sending Symonds' replacement to Darwin.

CA will hold a press conference after the match against Bangladesh to discuss Symonds' departure.

Australia-India Test will go on

Australia's high-profile cricket Test series in India will begin as scheduled in Bangalore in October, even though a tennis tournament was called off there over security fears.

“There is no change in the itinerary. Bangalore will host the first Test,” said Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah.

India's four-match series against world champions Australia opens in Bangalore from October 9-13. The remaining Tests will be played in Mohali, New Delhi and Nagpur.

A string of bomb blasts last month in Bangalore, the country's high-tech hub in the south, left one person dead and a dozen injured.

Australia last week joined a boycott of next month's Champions Trophy tournament in Pakistan due to security concerns, forcing the International Cricket Council to put off the eight-nation tournament till 2009.

The ATP confirmed in a statement issued Wednesday that the tournament, due to begin on September 29, had been cancelled.

“The ATP board can confirm that it has regrettably accepted a petition from the Bangalore Open to suspend the 2008 event due to the local promoter's security concerns,” the statement said.

“The total event prize money will now be paid into the ATP player pension fund.”

Local media reports speculated that tennis organisers had cited security fears because they had failed to attract top players for the event.

India's only other ATP event, the Chennai Open in January, attracts star players like world number one Rafael Nadal, who use it to prepare for the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam event of the season.
