Patel fined for abusive language

Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel has been fined for remarks made to an umpire during Wednesday's ODI against Sri Lanka, according to an International Cricket Council (ICC) statement.

Patel was fined 75 percent of his match fee for comments made to Gamini Silva after the official turned down a leg-before appeal during India's three-wicket win in the second one-dayer at Dambulla, Sri Lanka. The five-match series is level at 1-1.

The player pleaded not guilty to the charge but did admit to speaking aggressively to the umpire.

"I accept that in international cricket there is a lot of passion but that does not excuse players talking back to umpires in an aggressive manner,'' a refereeing official said in the statement.

"That is unacceptable and I hope this decision and the fine imposed demonstrates that fact.''
