By the Way, We're Still in the Epiphany Season

You may have wondered why the Gospel lesson for yesterday was Matthew 5:1-12. This is Epiphany Season, after all, a time when the Gospel lessons revolve around those instances in Jesus' life and ministry when His deity was revealed. What does yesterday's lesson, encompassing the opening of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, have to do with this Epiphany theme?

Consider the setting in which the sermon happens: "the mountain." It was to the top of a mountain that God called Moses back in the Old Testament book of Exodus. There, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments.

It was on mountain- and hill- tops that ancient peoples built shrines, altars, and temples to their deities. It was on Mount Zion in Jerusalem that God's people built the Temple. And God was deeply offended, repeatedly, when His people used other hills and mountains to erect altars to foreign deities, just to "cover all the bases."

When the one true God of the universe entered the world in the person of Jesus Christ, He called His followers to be with Him on the mountain to let them know more fully Who He is and what He wills. He showed Himself to be more than a "new Moses"; Jesus is God Himself calling us to be in relationship with Him.

Big News: Selena Gomez & The Scene to return with new album and single?

Disney pop princess Selena Gomez hasn't been doing much on the music front in terms of singles, but her and her band have kicked off their 2011 A Year Without Rain Tour in Puerto Rico, which she got some negative press for apparently, "not having scenography, back up dancers or clothing changes", playing to a stadium that had a 18, 500 spectator-limit. Hmmmm. Stick to the smaller stages, Sel.

Nevertheless, apparently the band are to start work on a new Spanish album and another English album. And they are to lift another single after US Top 40 single A Year Without Rain. GOOD. We really need another single. Personally, I don't think A Year Without Rain (the album) was good. It had way too much filler. And the only other track I can stand is Ghost of You.

In other Disney pop princess-related news, Demi Lovato's out of treatment centre which she admitted herself into last year. Props to her for sorting herself out. Now roll on the introspective third studio album.

Billboard Update

After Britney Spears breifly dethroned Bruno Mars' Grenade with Hold It Against Me, Mars has returned to #1 while Britney falls to #6 which gains the Airplay Gainer Title. The rest of the Hot 100 is exactly where you'd expect them to be, with Katy Perry's Firework at #2, Enrique Iglesias' guilty pleasure of a track Tonight (I'm Lovin' You) rising up to #4. Gaining some serious momentum is P!nk's F**kin' Perfect which manages to hit a new peak of #11 thanks to digital downloads. Taylor Swift also moves up with Back To December hitting #22 this week. Going from strength to strength is Christina Perri, who's Jar of Hearts has flown to a new peak of #26. Suffering a huge slip is Avril Lavigne, whose What The Hell has fallen to #31. No worries, Lavigne's music video premiered last week so you can expect it to go up on this week's chart. Adele's Rolling In The Deep is also pushing its way up the charts, hitting #84 this week. Rihanna's latest single S&M has re-entered at #90 this week.

Over on the albums chart, the entire Top 5 is filled with new releases with The Decemberists at #1, looking down at Kidz Bop Kids, The Script, Social Distortion, Gregg Allman in that order, while Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans falls to #6. Getting the Greatest Gainer Title is Katy Perry's Teenage Dream set, rising to #7 from #13 last week.

Lyric :

House full of roses, a letter on the stairs
A tape full of messages for anyone who cares
Collage of broken words and stories full of tears
Remembering your life cause we wish that you were here

Nothing is harder than to wake up all alone
Realize it's not okay, it's the end of all you know
Time keeps passing by, but it seems I'm frozen still
Scars are left behind, but some too deep to feel

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel tonight
We're all just victims of a crime
When all's gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain inside
We're all just victims of a crime

Some days you'll find me in a place I like to go
Ask questions to myself 'bout the things I'll never know
What's left to find? Cause I need a little more
I need a little time, can we even up the score?

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel, tonight
We're all just victims of a crime
When all's gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain, inside
We're all just victims of a crime

Nothing lasts forever, for all good things it's true
I'd rather trade it all while somehow saving you
It must have been the season that've threw us out of line
Once I stood so tall, now I'm searching for a sign

So don't need your salvation with promises and kind
And all the speculations, save it for another time
'Cause we all need a reason, a reason just to stay
And some just can't be bothered to stick around another day

And some say this can't be real
And I've lost my power to feel, tonight
We've all been victims of a crime
When all is gone and can't be regained
We can't seem to shelter the pain inside
We've all been victims of a crime

Victims of a crime
Living with this crime

I'm missing you
I'm missing you
I'm missing you
I'm missing you...

Nevertheless Blessed

[This was shared during worship with the people of Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Logan, Ohio, this morning.]

Matthew 5:1-12
It was Lent and the congregation I then served was holding joint midweek worship services with another Lutheran congregation. We were spending forty days talking about why bad things happen to faithful people and how we, as followers of Jesus, cope with that reality. I preached at the first service. But I looked at the pastor of the other congregation and didn’t feel good about our topic.

You see, he had already gone through so much: the untimely deaths of his mother, a daughter, and his wife, amid other sorrows.

“I don’t feel qualified to even talk about this subject,” I said, “because, compared to many of you, I have had little pain or adversity in my life.” The next week, my colleague responded to my confession in his sermon by saying, “Don’t worry. You will.”

Those were wise words. The reality that none of us is exempted from pain and adversity causes many people to give up on trusting in God. What does Jesus say to that?

Our Gospel lesson for this morning, Matthew 5:1-12 contains the opening words of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, including the few verses we call the Beatitudes. It’s a bit dangerous to preach on this text. Most Christians are so familiar with these words that they may think they have no need of hearing any more about them and so, are apt to mentally check out before the preacher even starts.

But there’s another danger in looking at the Beatitudes. That’s deciding just exactly what Jesus’ intent was in giving them. Martin Luther said that in these verses, Jesus is laying down a law so formidable that none of us can keep its provisions and so, we will be driven to Jesus in repentance and so receive new life. Some have said that these are ideals for which we’re called to strive as Christians. Others say that these are the principles that Christians must manifest when taking over the reins of political power, striving to bring the kingdom of heaven into the world by the force of our wills. And there are other interpretations of Jesus' intent. Who’s right?

In spite of the danger, let’s take a look at this passage together. Please pull our your Celebrate inserts and turn to Matthew 5:1-12. Now, to get something from an individual passage of Scripture, before we look at its content, we have to look at its context: What happens in the Biblical book before the passage in question appears? And how are some of the key words in the passage usually used?

In Matthew, chapter 4, preceding the verses of our lesson, Jesus begins His ministry, John the Baptizer is arrested, and from that time, Matthew says, “Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’” There are two words Jesus uses in that line that can help us make sense of the Beatitudes: Repent and Heaven.

Some people hear the word “repent” and automatically think that they’re being knocked down or judged. The call to repent is a call to all of us to examine ourselves and confess our sins to God, of course. But to repent also means to simply turn to Jesus, away from whatever might be distracting us from Him. When Jesus calls us to repent, He is calling us to turn to Him for the grace and new life only He can give.

Jesus also says that the “kingdom of heaven has come near.” We’re inclined to think of heaven as a place up in the sky where we’ll live in the sweet by-and-by. But that’s not how Jesus or most of the Bible used the word, “heaven.” In the Bible, heaven is the place where God is and God can be with us anywhere, anytime. In Jesus, heaven has invaded our world and He invades our world whenever we call His Name.

Later in Matthew, chapter 4, Jesus calls the first disciples from their fishing nets and then, to show them what the kingdom of heaven looks like, Jesus proclaims the good news and heals people.

Always a great teacher, Jesus begins by showing His students—His disciples—what His kingdom looks like. When we reach chapter 5, where this morning’s lesson is found, Jesus is ready to describe it to them, to help them to better understand not only what they have seen, but also the way of life to which they’ve now been called.

Look at verse 1 of our lesson, please. It says that Jesus went up the mountain and His disciples came to Him. In the Old Testament book of Exodus, God called Moses to the top of Mount Sinai to give Moses the Ten Commandments, the substance of the covenant God was making with His people. The people of Israel didn’t ascend the mountain. Moses was an intermediary between God and His people. But Jesus is the bringer of a new covenant from God. He invites those who want to be in a new and everlasting relationship with God to come to Him. The disciples take Jesus up on His invitation.

Jesus then gives a series of statements about who is “blessed.”
  • Blessed are the poor (or humble) in spirit.
  • Blessed are those who mourn; they will be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek (that is, those who repudiate the world’s power trips and instead boldly follow Jesus); they will inherit this earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (that is, for a right relationship with God); they will be filled with good things in a feast of love and plenty that Jesus will serve His followers for all eternity.
  • Blessed are the merciful, the pure in heart, those who bring the reconciliation of God available to all through Jesus Christ—the peacemakers, for they will be in Jesus’ kingdom.
  • Blessed are you when you are spurned, rejected, rebuffed for your faith in Christ.
The word in the original Greek of our text that’s translated as “blessed” can also be translated as fortunate or the recipients of wonderful news. But not everything Jesus talks about here seems blessed, fortunate, or wonderful.

Who wants to be poor in spirit, to mourn, or to experience the world turning against us for our faithfulness to Christ?

And do we have to attain certain heavenly levels of mercifulness, purity, and disciplemaking to get into Jesus’ kingdom?

I have some bad news and some good news for you this morning, what Luther and the Lutheran Confessions might call some law and some gospel.

The bad news is that, yes, these words do have the force of God’s law. God expects us to be merciful, pure in heart, and people intent on enacting reconciliation between God and others. We’re to be God’s middlewomen and middlemen, what the New Testament calls “ambassadors for Christ.” That’s not always a comfortable position. But God wants us to occupy it.

Compounding the bad news is something all of us, in the waning days of January, our New Year’s resolutions likely already a shambles, should be able to understand: We cannot muster enough will power to be the kinds of people Jesus says are the ones who occupy the kingdom of heaven.

But, here’s the good news. Jesus isn’t telling us to shape up and act right. One author asserts that: “[Jesus’] sermon is not a list of requirements, but…a description of the life of people gathered by and around Jesus…”

People who are living the life Jesus describes in the Beatitudes are often the last to know it. I’ve mentioned before my friend, Sig, who passed away some years ago now. Sig was an engineer at Cincinnati Milacron. So was a man who was part of the church in the Cincinnati area that I served for seventeen years, Bill. Their paths crossed just a few times because they worked at different plants, on different projects. But when Sig learned that Bill had joined the congregation I pastored, Sig told me, “He had a major influence on my faith years ago.” When I told Bill, he said, “I have no idea what I might have done.”

I wasn’t surprised by that. In another part of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus talks about the final judgment of humanity. He pictures Himself telling one group of people that they made their choices in this lifetime; when they ignored the needs of others, they were ignoring Jesus. They would live with their choices for eternity. Jesus says He will look at another group of people and say, “When you fed the most overlooked of the world, or clothed the naked, or visited the imprisoned, or gave water to the thirsty, you were serving me. You were paying attention to Me.” This group—the righteous—Jesus says, will be baffled. They won’t remember doing any of the good things Jesus extols.*

Through Jesus, the kingdom of heaven gets inside of us and we hardly know that as we keep returning to Jesus day in and day out, in
  • prayer,
  • worship,
  • the reading of Scripture,
  • receiving the Sacraments, and
  • serving and witnessing in Jesus’ Name,
we are being changed from the inside out.

When the kingdom of heaven gets inside of us, we’re not conscious of our mercy, purity, or faithfulness. We’re not making lists. We're not tracking our good deeds.

This fact is hidden in plain sight at the very beginning of our Gospel lesson, verse 1. Look at it again: “When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.” You might want to underline the last five words of that verse: His disciples came to Him.

The kingdom of heaven enters us,
  • we are changed from the inside out,
  • we are fitted for eternity with God,
  • we enter the process of transformation to become the people God made us to be,
  • we are able to face anything this life brings,
  • we are blessed forever by one simple thing:
By coming to Jesus, the Savior Who comes to us.

We all fall short of the glory of God; nevertheless, those who turn to Jesus Christ and who keep turning to Jesus Christ in spite of humiliations, grief, and adversity, are filled with God’s glory, now and in eternity.

A few mornings ago, Sarah told us about an acquaintance, a capable and caring manager, who was downsized out of his job in a large corporation. This was after other major setbacks in his life. Sarah asked if Ann and I would join her in prayer for this man. So there, in her bedroom, huddled together, we did just that. I don’t know how God is going to answer that prayer. But I do know that when we draw close to Jesus, the kingdom of heaven comes to us!

Here's a secret none of you probably know: Life in this world is not fair. Jesus acknowledges as much in the Beatitudes.

But when we keep turning to Jesus, we will be blessed!

And, no matter what happens in your life, you can always believe that!

*The two groups will experience very different ends, too. In Matthew 25:46, Jesus says that those who ignored others and so, ignored Him, "will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." This shouldn't surprise us. In Matthew 10:32-33, Jesus says, "Everyone who acknowledges Me before others, I also will acknowledge before My Father in heaven; but whoever denies Me before others, I will also deny before My Father in heaven."

Running Shoes
Bekana Daba's time in the Houston Marathon 2011 was 2:07:04, easily breaking the mark of 2:07:37 set by fellow Ethiopian Teshome Gelana in 2010. This year, however,. Gelana was unable to defend his title due to visa problems.
Daba took the lead at around 18 miles on the 26.2 mile Houston Marathon 2011 course. Far ahead of any competitors, at around the 25th mile, Daba left the course briefly. He stated the following, through an interpreter: "I was a little bit in need of going to the restroom. Somehow, I managed it."
The United State's Nick Arciniaga was second, with a personal-best of 2:11:30. Kenya-born Wilfred Murgor was third at 2:11:41.

Now We'll Have to See 'The Illusionist'

It had been something like three years since my last trip to a movie theater when, about a month ago, my wife and I took in The King's Speech at the Drexel Theater in Columbus. Go see that film, which exults in the gifts of marital and family love and in the healing power of friendship given and received, however unlikely our friendships may seem at their beginning.

Before the showing of The King's Speech, a trailer for The Impressionist was shown. My wife and I were intrigued by its use of conventional, rather than computer-generated, animation and the beauty and realism of its characters' movements, not to mention that the film appeared to present a story that young and old can latch onto.

This review, from Roger Ebert's new online program featuring various film reviewers, makes me want to go back to the theater soon to see The Illusionist.

Here's a link to the trailer.

She applies for a job through her blog...

...and manages to get the plea commercially sponsored, to boot. You've got to admire innovation like that, I guess.

Big News: Cheryl Cole.. X Factor USA? Or not?

With the success of American Idol Season 10 (so far), The X Factor US/FOX execs sure don't want to mess with the debut season of The X Factor. Simon, as usual, is determined to get a certain Miss Cheryl Cole on the judging panel but apparently, reports have surfaced that FOX execs aren't too game for the idea. The Geordie sweetheart's thick accent, I would assume?

But of course, while FOX execs aren't exactly dense, Simon's smarter than that. What he gets, he wants. Thus, Cowell does have a back up plan up his sleeve. Reports are saying Mr. Cowell is planning to have Cheryl be a mentor on the show, the same way Sinitta does on the UK show. The plan is to have audiences warm up to her in ints first season before Simon tries to land her a slot on the panel next year again.

Hmmm. Well I don't watch the entire UK show, and only catch up via YouTube, I rarely saw Sinitta, actually I don't think I've seen her at all.

Cowell, work your magic and get her as a judge, please.

Avril Lavigne - What The Hell live @ Music Station

Avril Lavigne has been in Japan recently to promote her single What The Hell and her upcoming fourth studio album Goodbye Lullaby. The pop/rock stomper has been performing rather well in charts all over the world and she debuted What The Hell in Japan live at Music Station. It was okay. The vocals weren't as great as the one at Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Eve but she had quite a fair bit more energy.

Jessie J - Price Tag [Music Video Premiere]

BRIT Award-winning British singer/songwriter Jessie J is riding high on the British Singles Chart with her #2 peaking debut single Do It Like A Dude. However, the swag-filled track might rub some American audiences the wrong way and Jessie has decided to play it safe with her US debut single Price Tag which features rapper B.o.B. You can pretty much expect this to be a ginormous hit as well too.

The music video isn't anything special, and it's very doll-ish and young, spirited and playful. It's nice, though.

God: Irrevocably Faithful

In his book, God Gives Second Chances, Pentecostal preacher R.T. Kendall writes about the strange phenomenon of people who have turned away from God, yet remain the Church, sometimes in positions of leadership, and still evidence the spiritual gifts God has given to them. He writes:
People ask, How can a person's gift flourish when they are living in sin [whatever the sin might be]? I can only answer with Romans 11:29: "For God's gifts and his call are irrevocable"...This verse refers principally to God's own decree that He will not change His mind, but Paul is also saying that whether or not a person has repented of their sins is not a necessary condition for receiving or maintaining a spiritual gift...Spiritual or ministerial gifts are sovereignly bestowed on a person, not because of one's good works...
I thought of Kendall's point during my morning devotions using today's installment of Our Daily Bread. Written by David C. McCasland, it's based on 1 Kings 10:23, 11:1-10. That passage is about ancient Israel's third and most powerful king, Solomon.

When Solomon came to the throne, he was just a boy and overwhelmed by the responsibilities that had been thrust upon him. Early in his reign, Solomon was visited by God in a dream. "Ask what I should give you," God told him. Solomon told God how daunting his responsibilities were and then made his request: "Give your servant...an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil..." (1 Kings 3:3-14). Solomon asked for the gift of wisdom and God granted it to Solomon.

Solomon possessed that wisdom until the end of his days. We're told that he was the wise composer of Proverbs and of the more world-weary Ecclesiastes, which, as McCasland points out, in spite of a depressing fixation on life's supposed "vanity" (or futility), ends with this bit of wisdom:
Fear God and keep his commandments; for that is the whole duty of everyone. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14).
But, though given the gift of wisdom by God irrevocably, Solomon misused his gifts to walk away from God and to buttress his level of comfort and power in this world. He did this at the expense of his own relationship with God and that of his country. (See Jesus' words here.) Look at the verses on which the Our Daily Bread piece for the day is based:
Thus King Solomon excelled all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.
King Solomon loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh: Moabite, Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite women, from the nations concerning which the Lord had said to the Israelites, “You shall not enter into marriage with them, neither shall they with you; for they will surely incline your heart to follow their gods”; Solomon clung to these in love. Among his wives were seven hundred princesses and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. For when Solomon was old, his wives turned away his heart after other gods; and his heart was not true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of his father David. For Solomon followed Astarte the goddess of the Sidonians, and Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. So Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not completely follow the Lord, as his father David had done. Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites, on the mountain east of Jerusalem. He did the same for all his foreign wives, who offered incense and sacrificed to their gods.
Then the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this matter, that he should not follow other gods; but he did not observe what the Lord commanded.
What happened to Solomon was a personal tragedy, of course. But his splintered allegiance also impacted his people, God's chosen people. Along with Solomon and his 1000 wives, they embraced false gods, their allegiance to God alone fractured. They embraced dependence on things like power, wealth, and sexual adventurism, rather than on God alone. When spiritual leaders or people whose faith we admire turn from God, it can have a terrible effect on us all.

In fact, when any member of the Church "defects" from God, it can effect many people. And sometimes, their defection may be unknown to us and unnoticed even by the defectors themselves. That's the focus of something that Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote about in the portion of The Cost of Discipleship I read last evening.

Bonhoeffer talks about Jesus' discussion of wolves in sheep's clothing, people who never did believe or who have departed from faith, who may be in the midst of the Church:
The disciples of Jesus must not fondly imagine that they can simply run away from the world and huddle together in a little band. False prophets will rise up among them, and amid the ensuing confusion they [that is, the the followers of Jesus in His Church] will feel more isolated than ever. There is someone standing by my side, who looks just like a member of the Church. He is a prophet and a preacher. He looks like a Christian, he talks and acts like one. But dark powers are mysteriously at work...Inwardly he is a ravening wolf: his words are lies and his works are full of deceit. He knows only too well how to keep his secret dark, and go ahead with his work. It is not faith in Jesus Christ which made him one of us, but the devil...His ambitions are set on the world, not on Jesus Christ. Knowing that Christians are credulous people, he conceals his dark purpose beneath the cloak of Christian piety, hoping that his innocuous disguise will avert detection. He knows that Christians are forbidden to judge, and he will remind them of it at the appropriate time...Thus he succeeds in seducing many from the right way. He may even be unconscious himself of what he is doing.* The devil can give him every encouragement and at the same time keep him in the dark about his own motives.
That, to me, is both chilling and instructive. Like the proverbial frogs in the kettle, unaware that the temperature of the once cold water in which they settle is being brought to a boil, we can become so accustomed to the evil around us and within us, that, without our even knowing it, we defect from the God Who sent His Son Jesus to die and rise for us and in Whom, with our words, we may even confess every Sunday morning.

But faith in Jesus is not just words.

Our Gospel lesson for tomorrow, Matthew 5:1-12, which includes the beginning portion of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in which Jesus shares what are called the Beatitudes, we read this:
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.
We cannot and, as Christians, should not seek to, control the faith or beliefs of others. And we cannot control the things that happen to us in our lives. But we can do this: We can, like the disciples on that mountaintop, come to Jesus. And when we fail, we sin, or we get hurt by life, we keep coming to Jesus.

God is irrevocably faithful. And if we will come to Jesus each day, whatever befalls us, we will not only be blessed, we will know that we are blessed, and live in the Kingdom of heaven now and in eternity.

Quote of the Day

This from someone named Edgar Watson: "The most destructive criticism is indifference."

That's sort of the flip side of, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

Of course, our indifference may be a judgment either on ourselves or on that to which we're indifferent. Hmm.

Going to Gasparilla? We have tips

Going to Gasparilla? We have tips : According to the internet media, its all about the latest news and updates, internet media provided real hot topic information, that news latest updates is,It's based on an event that probably never happened, it drives some homeowners in South Tampa crazy, and it forbids the very behavior that pirates of legend indulged in.
Even so, Gasparilla — now the Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest — is all ours. Like it or hate it, it's what we do in this town. We tend to like it, but it helps to know what you're doing. Driving around South Tampa looking for a parking space and then attempting to walk two or three miles through the crowd is just no way to run the festival train.
That's why we've compiled this list of things to know that we hope makes your Gasparilla experience more enjoyable.
As is always the case with this sort of event, good friends (say, a guy with a boat who is participating in the "pirate invasion") or a little cash (to get into some of the best parties) will make your experience all the better. But even if you don't want to spend a dime, there's plenty to enjoy.

With guns blazing and beads flying, Gasparilla pirates invade Tampa

TAMPA According to the internet media, its all about the latest news and updates, internet media provided real hot topic information, that news latest updates is, With its cannons blazing, and make-believe pirates waving from every crow's nest, the Jose Gasparilla invaded the city Saturday afternoon.
The pirates, many with cigars in their mouths and beers in their hands, fired rounds of fake — but nonetheless loud -- pistol fire as the ship came in beside the Tampa Convention Center.
Many of the pirates wore headphones to muffle the bangs. The crowd was not so fortunate.
Still, people surrounded the pirates as they disembarked, some even crawling on their knees to get beads the pirates threw and strung around necks.
Bedecked with beads, Nancy Kasacca from Naples shared her secret for getting so many: "eye contact."
Boats laden with thousands of beads, and lined up so close together in the bay they resembled lily pads, greeted the Jose Gasparilla.
With MC Hammer's Can't Touch This blasting, a sleek yellow boat called Group Therapy pushed off.
Two women on board were making 280 water balloons. Twelves cases of beads awaited.
What were they doing with all that?
"Invading," said the boat's owner, Kenny Marshall, 45, of Bradenton.

We don't want to drop any names quite yet, but suffice it to say that there are plenty of players in this year's Senior Bowl who have already seen their draft stock slowly erode, whether over a matter of weeks or the entire course of the 2010 college football season.
Of the dozens of players who will grace the field on Saturday, ahead is a list of 10 players in particular who can't afford to struggle in the Senior Bowl.

Anonymous and Tunisia: A New Cyber Warfare?

Anonymous and Tunisia: A New Cyber Warfare : According to the internet media, its all about the latest news and updates, internet media provided real hot topic information, that news latest updates is,Tunisia's 'Jasmine Revolution' ignited on December 17th, when a street vendor named Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire in front of a local police station. The demonstration struck a chord within millions of Tunisians -- many of whom, like Bouazizi, had fallen on hard times, due to the country's stagnant labor market, skyrocketing food prices and high-level political corruption. Within days, protesters had flooded the streets of Sidi Bouzid, an economically downtrodden region of the country. Within weeks, they had forced President Zine Al Abidine Ben Ali to flee the country, after 23 years of autocratic rule.
As the upheaval unfolded, it soon became clear that the Jasmine Revolution was not a typical uprising. Tunisians spread their revolutionary fervor to the digital sphere, where Ben Ali's regime had previously enjoyed unchallenged sovereignty. As scores of protesters clashed with police and demanded economic and social reform, an equally impassioned, if comparatively less tangible war was being waged online -- one involving not tear gas and demonstrators, but malware and rogue hackers.
Ben Ali's regime decided to reassert its control over the media during the upheaval by launching a cyber attack against some of Tunisia's most outspoken critics. Within a few hours of the large-scale crackdown, the government's targeted phishing campaign effectively muzzled a select group of online activists, leading to the arrests of influential bloggers and dissidents.

The news Hair Flair: Hair Flares

The news  Hair Flair: Hair Flares: Are you looking for some extra sparkle and shine? There are a lot of people that are interested in the new fad that is going on. Beyonce had some crazy sexy hair at the Grammy’s using some of these. Hair flair is going to be in this summer for sure.
Hair flair is just another way for women to show off their beautiful hair. These are pretty simple as well you just have to knot the pieces of tinsel into your hair. You can use different colors and they can actually last for up to two weeks. Are you going to get your hair flair on?
If you want to stick out when you go out this is one great way to do it. This may be a good alternative if you do not want to get highlights. I have a feeling we are going to see these all over Hollywood soon. Don’t miss out on your hair flair.

What’s the Reason of Troy Aikman Divorce?

What’s the Reason of Troy Aikman Divorce?: Troy Aikman Divorce, Troy Aikman has separated from his wife, Rhonda. The couple married in 2000. It is not known how long they have been separated, but Rhonda bought a house north of Dallas in November.
Normally, this question does not concern us. Insofar as is known, the couple is still married. Rhonda is living in another house is a question may be interesting to gossip about the publication, but no. It feels a bit like reporting that the couple is not having a happy marriage. Really, that’s their business. They divorced, is another matter. Aikman is a public figure.
But here’s the thing: it is on our cover this month. Our sub-title reads: “Football God for marriage, loss, and how he got lucky in the dissemination of the greatest game on earth.” For those who are aware of Aikman split – and it seems that many people in town had nown since at least Christmas, when Rhonda does not appear in the annual festival Aikman – which cover line suggests that he spoke of the journal of his marital troubles. He did not. Zac Crain reported the story in late November and early December, before we know the separation. He did not ask about it, and Troy (understandably) did not volunteer information

Holy Bull Starts Florida's Triple Crown Trail

Holy Bull Starts Florida's Triple Crown Trail : The withdrawal of Boys At Tosconova leaves a wide open field of nine sophomores to contest the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park Jan. 30, the first major step toward the Florida Derby (gr. I) this spring.
The race, a one-turn mile, is the 10th on the Gulfstream card with a 5:26 p.m. EST starting time. It is part of a program that includes the $200,000 Forward Gal Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-old fillies, part of a big stakes weekend at the south Florida track.
Boys at Tosconova, expected to be the favorite in the the Holy Bull, was withdrawn a day before the Jan. 27 draw due to trainer Rick Dutrow Jr.'s concerns about the colt's readiness. But what remains is a solid field that includes stakes-tested colts such as Mucho Macho Man, Gourmet Dinner, and Major Gain, as well as some highly anticipated newcomers, led by Dialed In and the fast-improving Black N Beauty.
Of those mentioned, only Ahmed Zayat's Black N Beauty, an Ontario-bred son of Devil His Due   that cost just $2,500 as a 2009 Keeneland September yearling, has raced during the young Gulfstream meet.
Black N Beauty won impressively Jan. 7 in a first-level allowance at one mile by 2 1/2 lengths while leading all the way under Kent Desormeaux for his second straight win. The smallish dark bay/brown colt broke his maiden as a heavy favorite at Churchill Downs last November, which was his third start.
"He’s a nice looking little colt," said trainer Dale Romans. "He was late in the sale, and it wasn’t a popular sire--and there was no reserve. Sometimes you get lucky.”
Romans knows that Black N Beauty, who drew post 4 and is ridden once more by Desormeaux, is facing a tough group in the Holy Bull. “You’ve got Gourmet Dinner and Kathy Ritvo’s horse (Mucho Macho Man) -- they’re pretty nice horses, and they’re pretty even after that,” he said.
“We’ll see how he progresses against the best, and then we’ll leave it up to Mr. Zayat.”

Mile Run Delivers Upset Amid Twists at Millrose

Mile Run Delivers Upset Amid Twists at Millrose: After more than a century, the Millrose Games maintain their position as a singular event in track and field.
There are the tight quarters and manic activity, suggesting a three-ring circus; the officials circling the track in tuxedos add to the effect. There are the widely disparate events — representing, in a sense, the highbrow and lowbrow of track and field — clattering along the curved wooden track of the Garden, a techno beat thumping all the while in the background.
Chief among them in recent years has been Bernard Lagat, who has won the Wanamaker Mile, the meet’s marquee event, a record eight times.
But he failed Friday to capture his ninth, losing to Deresse Mekonnen, a 23-year-old Ethiopian and the current world indoor champion, who finished in 3 minutes 58.58 seconds.
Lagat led for the first seven laps of the 11-lap race before Mekonnen overtook him. Lagat made three furious passing attempts in the last two laps — his gold chain swaying against his purple top — but fell short, finishing in 3:59.01.
“The straightaways are just that small,” Lagat said, holding his index fingers in front of his face. “He held his position.”
The race served as a tense, scintillating coda to an otherwise whimsical night.
Ashton Eaton won the Millrose Multi Challenge, a quirky event created this year to bring together three of America’s best decathletes. His scores for the three challenges — the shot-put, 60-meter hurdles and high jump — were enough to beat Trey Hardee, the gold medalist at the 2009 world championships, and Bryan Clay, the gold medalist at the Beijing Olympics.
“There was a lot of nervousness in this young man, because the competition that I faced,” Eaton said. “But there’s a lot of fight in this young man.”
The women’s 60-meter hurdles featured Queen Harrison, 22, a native of Loch Sheldrake, N.Y., who was named the top female collegiate track and field athlete in the country last year and has generated much buzz this season.
But Harrison struggled off the blocks, and it was Vonette Dixon, 35, a veteran hurdler from Jamaica, who prevailed with a time of 8 seconds. Harrison finished in 8.19 seconds for fourth place.
“My speed is not quite there, because I’ve been working on my strength,” Harrison said.
That these games were a dry run of sorts for the outdoor season — including the world championships this August in Daegu, South Korea — was a recurring theme among the athletes Friday night.

SpongeBob Legends Of Bikini Bottom: If You Missed New Episode, Find It On Facebook

In an interesting partnership, Nickelodeon has teamed up with Facebook and aired tonight’s brand new episode of everyone’s favorite SpongeBob Squarepants one day early on Facebook. Although premiered on television for the first time tonight on Nickelodeon, the first episode of a five part series called Legends of Bikini Bottom premiered on the social networking site last night. Guest stars include Amy Sedaris (Ma Angler) who plays the leader of the clan of trenchbillies, and Ginnifer Goodwin (as Mermaid).  The clan hold SpongeBob and his buddy Patrick captive while they are out jellyfishing one day.
This was big news in our household. At 8pm, the kids sat awaiting the new episode. In case they missed it, they set it to record on DVR earlier today. A new SpongeBob episode is big news in our home, and apparently in a lot of other places. While the show is funny, really funny, I didn’t realize how much it appealed to the older kids, but it must if Facebook got the first glimpse. Surely, they don’t think that 5 or 6 year-olds have Facebook accounts?SpongeBob’s Facebook page has over 16 million fans alone. My 13-year-old still loves SpongeBob and his quirky underwater friends and I have to admit that the show makes me laugh a lot. It’s one of those unique blends that appeal to kids and parents.
Yet with such a large following, just having the ability to draw in viewers using Facebook suggests that it has a very large fan base of older teens and possibly adults. Kids aren’t officially allowed to have their own Facebook accounts until age 13, but I’m sure a lot of moms will let their younger ones watch the episode on their accounts. Kids as young as preschoolers know what Facebook is, especially since so many moms make checking their Facebook account a daily activity.
These social networking sites are not only gaining attention from users, many of whom are parents, but it seems they are now be marketed specifically to parents (and possibly kids). The show, launched by Stephen Hillenburg almost 12 years ago has roughly 70-million viewers monthly. It remains one of the most popular shows on MTV Networks’ history, and generates more than $8-billion in worldwide retail sales.

NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster

NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster: According to the internet Media, NASA is remembering three major tragedies in its history this week, starting with the 25th anniversary of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger on Friday.
"This year marks the 25th anniversary of the loss of the Challenger—a tragedy that caused us to completely rethink our systems and processes as we worked to make the shuttle safer," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in an AFP reportAlong with deputy administrator Lori Garver, Bolden honored the lives of those lost in Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia Thursday morning.
"The nation will never forget Jan. 28, 1986, nor its indelible images," Bolden added.
Challenger's entire crew was killed when the shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after its launch, 46,000 feet in the air. The explosion was broadcast on live television.
challenger explosion
In 2003, a faulty heat shield caused Columbia to disintegrate as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, killing seven astronauts. A fire aboard Apollo 1 proved fatal for the vessel's crew of three in 1967. This mission was the first of NASA's manned trips to the moon.
Since 1964, 24 people have been killed in a NASA mission, but NASA says it has learned since then.
"Safety is the number one priority at NASA and the shuttle launch schedule does not drive discussions or decisions when issues arise," a NASA spokesperson told PCMag. "That is reiterated often and is apparent in media events about the issues."
apollo 1 Perhaps the most telling example is the recent delays in the coming launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. The ship was originally set to take off on its final voyage on Nov. 1, but due to leaks, inclement weather, electrical issues, and equipment problems, the mission was delayed more than a half a dozen times. It's now scheduled to lift off Feb. 24.
"NASA has learned hard lessons from each of our tragedies, and they are lessons that we will continue to keep at the forefront of our work as we continuously strive for a culture of safety that will help us avoid our past mistakes and heed warnings while corrective measures are possible," Bolden said.
After Discovery, the shuttle Endeavor is supposed to launch in April 18, the AFP said. Additionally, if Congress hands over the necessary funds, NASA is hoping to send Space Shuttle Atlantis into orbit for an additional trip.

Happy Birthday, Marty!

Today is the birthday of my brother, Marty, who happens to be a very talented Voice Over Artist.

ADDED: Marty's blogged reflections on the recent experiences of announcer Ted Williams, who Marty knew back in the 80s.

David Frye is Dead

Back in the day, all our Nixon impressions were really impressions of Frye imitating Nixon. He suffered the same fate as that previously dealt to Kennedy impersonator Vaughn Meader, whose comedy career largely went away when JFK was assassinated.

Following Nixon's resignation, Frye was seldom seen or heard again. Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but as a source of income, it usually has pronounced ups and downs.

Who is "Pure in Heart"?

In studying the lesson on which I'll be preaching this Sunday, Matthew 5:1-12 (The Beatitudes), I've been looking at Dietrich Bonhoeffer's chapter on the passage in The Cost of Discipleship. I love what he says about, "Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God":
Who is pure in heart? Only those who have surrendered their hearts completely to Jesus that he may reign in them alone. Only those whose hearts are undefiled by their own evil-and by their own virtues too. The pure in heart have a child-like simplicity like Adam before the fall, innocent alike of good and evil: their hearts are not ruled by their conscience, but by the will of Jesus.
The old saw about letting your conscience be your guide is foolish nonsense. Unless our consciences are guided by the God revealed in Jesus Christ, we will always drift into self-delusion, harm to ourselves and others, and dishonor to the One Who made us. (I know. Being an imperfect sinner, I "drift" a lot, which is why I repent--that is, turn back to Jesus for forgiveness and new direction and new life every day.)

Martin Luther famously told the Diet of Worms, "My conscience is captive to the Word of God." God grant that I will be just such a captive and so be set free to be an innocent child of God, my true self.

The day part of the Internet died: Egypt goes dark

The day part of the Internet died: Egypt goes dark According to the internet media, its all about the latest news and updates, internet media provided real hot topic information, that news latest updates is, Almost simultaneously, the handful of companies that pipe the Internet into and out of Egypt went dark as protesters were gearing up for a fresh round of demonstrations calling for the end of President Hosni Mubarak's nearly 30-year rule, experts said.
Egypt has apparently done what many technologists thought was unthinkable for any country with a major Internet economy: It unplugged itself entirely from the Internet to try and silence dissent.
Experts say it's unlikely that what's happened in Egypt could happen in the United States because the U.S. has numerous Internet providers and ways of connecting to the Internet. Coordinating a simultaneous shutdown would be a massive undertaking.
"It can't happen here," said Jim Cowie, the chief technology officer and a co-founder of Renesys, a network security firm in Manchester, N.H., that studies Internet disruptions. "How many people would you have to call to shut down the U.S. Internet? Hundreds, thousands maybe? We have enough Internet here that we can have our own Internet. If you cut it off, that leads to a philosophical question: Who got cut off from the Internet, us or the rest of the world?"
In fact, there are few countries anywhere with all their central Internet connections in one place or so few places that they can be severed at the same time. But the idea of a single "kill switch" to turn the Internet on and off has seduced some American lawmakers, who have pushed for the power to shutter the Internet in a national emergency.
The Internet blackout in Egypt shows that a country with strong control over its Internet providers apparently can force all of them to pull their plugs at once, something that Cowie called "almost entirely unprecedented in Internet history."
The outage sets the stage for blowback from the international community and investors. It also sets a precedent for other countries grappling with paralyzing political protests — though censoring the Internet and tampering with traffic to quash protests is nothing new.
China has long restricted what its people can see online and received renewed scrutiny for the practice when Internet search leader Google Inc. proclaimed a year ago that it would stop censoring its search results in China.

Charlie Sheen released from hospital According to the internet media, its all about the latest news and updates, internet media provided real hot topic information, that news latest updates is, Charlie Sheen is out of the hospital and back home.
Publicist Stan Rosenfield says Sheen left a Los Angeles hospital Thursday night. Sheen had been taken to the hospital earlier in the day complaining of severe stomach pains. Rosenfield says the actor has a history of hernia problems.
Rosenfield said Friday that Sheen will be back on the set of CBS's Two and a Half Men when a filming hiatus ends Tuesday.Sheen has been dogged by personal problems and apparent health issues, with three hospitalizations in three months. Two weeks ago, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the network has a “high level of concern” about its hard-partying star.
