SA justice to hear Gambhir elbow appeal

The appeal by Indian opener Gautam Gambhir against a one-Test ban for elbowing Australian allrounder Shane Watson will be heard by noted human rights campaigner and South African constitutional court justice Albie Sachs.

The ICC named Sachs to re-examine Gambhir's case after India lodged their appeal against the penalty imposed by match referee Chris Broad for the incident on day one of the third Test between Australia and India in Delhi.

It remains likely that the hearing will be delayed until after the conclusion of the final Test in Nagpur due to there being only three days between matches.

Sachs, 71, is to retire from South Africa's highest court next year, but after a career spent fighting apartheid and then helping the nation through a process of reconciliation, he seems more than qualified to rule on a case that has once again exposed the cultural differences between the Australian and Indian teams.
