I wonder what Rand thinks about the sale of US military goods to foreign countries? Surely the sale of such, especially to militant countries like Iraq, Libya, Israel, etc, violates his sacrosanct policy of non-intervention.

But to not be allowed to sell weapons would violate his free market capitalism solves all problems philosophy. Cruise missiles don't kill people, people kill people ;)

Apologies...if it has already been discussed...I am at an airport, and dont have the time to scroll through all the pages before my flight departure:

    http://www.9to5mac.com/new-macbook-pros-5464563

Looks like a hoax to me anyway.....

Update: We've received multiple tips that there would be Pro updates in the coming days. This latest one about the MacBook Pros may have been fake. Shame on us.

    ..

I think it could still happen, though. I still believe AppleMayhem had a credible story, and he said the 16th would be the day. Here's hoping.

Anyone knows if the mac pro allows us to upgrade to PCI graphics cards bought from retail stores? Will there be any driver issues? Do graphics card vendors include Mac drivers on their installation disc? Never seen one that does though..
    Thx for answering.

So, in this situation, would the Military Complex be called an entitlement program, as much of it exists solely to keep people from starving or going homeless? Because that's what it sounds like to me when you talk about it like this.

Yeah, I would say it is a huge entitlement program, but its impact crosses socio-economic lines. Wealthy people are subsidized by Pentagon profligacy just as much as the lower classes. Bear in mind, also, that service represents a route out of poverty for some people. But, really, with a wide-angle lens, many government programs affect more than just their central focus. Education, for example.

My personal opinion is that our socio-economic system is already so horribly feudal, broken and unstable that any reasonable, measured action we take to fix it amounts to duct tape on the reactor core.

We heard something really similar to that when every other company released video-playing mp3 players before Apple did, and Jobs said he didn't see anybody wanting to have portable video. Well, Apple bit its tongue and released it, calling it "innovation".

You know what, Steve never said Apple would NEVER do a video iPod. What he said was that video just didn't make sense at the time. For one thing, he said that there was practically zero demand from iPod users for video. Then he qualified his statement by saying that the situation might be different in the future, but the media being what it is, his comment was reduced to the overly simplistic (but easy to report), "APPLE WILL NEVER MAKE A VIDEO IPOD."

And for your information, the release of the video iPod was innovative because Apple launched it in conjunction with $1.99 music videos and TV shows on the iTunes Store. Less than a year later, there are like 250 TV shows you can buy on iTunes, from the latest hits like Grey's Anatomy to old classics like Knight Rider.

I always get a little peeved that people are so easily dismissive of the iTunes piece of the iPod pie. iPod wouldn't be where it is today without iTunes and the iTunes Store. If it took Apple 18 months to convince the music companies to sell their music for $0.99 on iTunes, then don't you think Apple made the right decision by waiting to launch the video iPod simultaneously with iTunes video offerings? iPod is nothing without content and Steve clearly believes that iPod should never lack for legal music/video content, ever.

I, for one, know from an Apple iPod engineer that Apple had a working video iPod in the labs more than 2 years ago, but it's quite clear that Steve had the patience and foresight to wait until the time was right for video, instead of launching a product into a vacuum. History is full of products that - while technical marvels - utterly failed because they were before their time. Newton was one. The Tucker automobile was another.

I'm a big iPod fan (i've purchased 3) but wireless capabilities is the way of the future. I don't see ourselves in 10 years still being limited by wired headphones and such. Maybe it'll be easier than the Zune (haven't seen the demo) but the idea of beaming a song for somebody else to download/hear is pretty cool to me.

Glad you are such a big fan of the iPod. :) I own 4 iPods myself. :-P

Your prediction about wireless isn't necessarily wrong, but what Steve understands is 1) timing is important and 2) technology in context is even more important. Microsoft never understood this - they're all about feature bullet points and will enthusiastically push out new tech that ends up being poorly implemented and doesn't even end up solving the problems that consumers face in using technology.

Zune is wireless for the sake of wireless. It's wireless crap. Having wireless will not make Zune a better device - in fact, I think most people will soon come to the conclusion that it's crap because there will be no other Zune users within 100 miles to "squirt" each other with.

What people seem to forget is that Apple isn't stupid. It's like all the bruhala that erupted last year when geeks of every stripe claimed iPod would finally be killed because the music cell phone would be the killer product. What's funny is how these people assume Apple suddenly sent all its engineers home and decided, "Well, we've sold 50 million iPods. Time to call it day. No new iPods, ever."

As is now all but certain, Apple has been working on an iPod phone for a while. So much for music phones killing the iPod - maybe this year's iPod, but Apple is not a company to stand still.

Same thing with wireless. What people seem to forget is that Apple already has shown the way in terms of wireless. I'm talking about the broadcasting features already built in to iTunes via Bonjour networking. If you go to any college dorm or library, you'll notice a few to a dozen iTunes music libraries that will show up in your iTunes. People are already streaming their music for free, direct from iTunes, over 802.11. iTunes Sharing has already been doing the "music community" thing for a long time now.

So it seems quite obvious to me that a wireless iPod will be able to pick up these local iTunes streams like a Mac or PC running iTunes can already do.

If Apple wanted to push the technology a bit, then iPods would be able to stream music iPod-to-Mac(s), iPod-to-PC(s), and iPod-to-iPod(s). None of these limited point-to-point crap like Zune. No slow, time-bomb file transfers. Instead, we'll see live streaming from one iPod to many iPods, PCs, or Macs. No music file will actually be transferred, just as in iTunes sharing, which allows Apple to avoid the messiness of wrapping files in DRM like with Zune. A wireless iPod could tune in simultaneously with many different streams at the same time, and it'd be instantaneous because no transfers actually occur.

Sure, you won't be able to take the streams with you, but wireless iPod with iTunes Sharing would be infinitely more usable and fun than some geeky, slow, unworkable Zune model.

So I say just wait. I mean, can you imagine how badly Zune will blow up after Microsoft has launched the product (when they've committed to expensive manufacturing and the R&D is finished) and Apple launches a wireless iPod that actually works like a wireless device is supposed to?

Remember - just think "iPod with iTunes Sharing" and compare that to Zune, and realize with a smile that Microsoft is rushing forward into one of the biggest trainwrecks in music history. Apple's just waiting for them to build up momentum so the spectacle will be spectacular when the tracks get cut out from under them! ;)

    a) apple did the exact same thing with OS X. aqua was kept under wraps for a long, long time from the general public and public developers. up until maybe a year before hand we all though OS X was going to look like OS 9.

    b) if you work with big software makers you'll know that top tier developers get access to things that aren't made publicly available months and years in advance. the last alpha/beta cycle i participated in started one month after the latest release (and i was on the second invite list).

    a) see above regarding developers. just because we didn't see it in the keynote doesn't mean that the developers haven't

    b) app developers don't really integrate with the finder.

    c) tiger represented a big shift in OS X development. apple publicly stated that their APIs, previously a moving target, were basically being locked down. what that means is developers don't have to worry (as much) about under the hood changes. if the file browser dialog changes dramatically between now and next spring developers should theoretically have to do nothing, their function/method calls are just calls.
You hit a lot of points here that I chose not to present. You are correct.
    a) The OS X preview UI was definitely a surprise, that's for sure.
    b) Very true.
    a) True, but I think this only applies to the "top tier" developers, as you suggest. (Adobe, for example)
    b) Exactly! Other than visually... (Which it's easy to skin your app to match (see Uno))
    c) If this is true (which I could understand, but have no evidence of) are you suggesting Apple laid the groundwork for a UI overhaul in Tiger and didn't apply it?

It isn't my job to educate you on the facts - Read (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_and_crime_in_the_United_States), focusing on the linked statistical breakdowns by ethnicity. You'll have to nose around to find all the data. All that the facts proove is that poor black people with little education who grow up in economically depressed comunnities and are surrounded by crime are more likely to commit crimes

Um, yeah, tell me something i don't know. The question we are pondering is why more blacks live in poor areas with high crime rates than other races. You can beat around the bush all you want to avoid the real question here and make excuses. Even if i bought these excuses for the US, explain to me why the trend is exactly the same, if not worse, in european countries that don't have the same past discrimination as the US. You keep dodging the question.

Can we talk about the disparity between the dificulty levels? I played the game through the first time on heroic and I am not trying to pat myself on the back or anything but it wasn't that hard. I played the first level on legendary last night and I'm pretty sure I died at least a billion times. Whats the deal? I don't remember Halo 3 being like that.
Yea, they seem to really amp up the damage you take when the difficulty rises. I don't like that method. It takes like 3 or 4 shots from a Grunt's Plasma Pistol to completely down your shield, and then pretty much any shots after that will kill you. It isn't very fun. I would prefer if they would just make the enemies harder to kill, like with better shields or better tactics. Just making it easier for them to kill me isn't really challenging, it is just arbitrarily difficult, and pretty lame.

And yes, this game is a good deal harder than Halo 3. I think it is a combination of the improved AI, more enemies, and the fact that they almost always give you a weapon with hardly any ammo. Having to run around looking for weapons, while getting instantly killed is just about as low on my "Fun Factor" scale a game can get.

If you think about it, it's not all too surprising that some of these "professionals" are getting so worked up and sulky over this release.

And who, exactly, are you talking about?

All I've seen are a few anonymous comments on this message board. Who are those people? Are they pros? I don't know who they are. Do you know?

Funny how you've developed a whole theory about "professionals" and yet you haven't proved in any way that any pros said what you claimed they said. I've read that the crowd at the show seemed to really love it.

So if you're going to come here and claim you've heard people saying the exact opposite of the news report then you really need to explain where you heard that and who was saying it.

I'm not necessarily referring to the responses on this thread, just some of the general backlash that Final Cut Pro X has received for looking like iMovie by people claiming to be industry professionals. I use the term loosely because I'm makIng a point about the meaninglessness of the word "professional". Why am I getting such bitter responses from people who seem to agree with my point?

Today's mythical creature isn't really mythical. The Gigantopithecus is an ancient form of the ape. There is speculation that it still exists and is the reason for yeti and Big Foot sightings. I guess that is the reason for including it in a mythical creatures display.

The iPhone 5 will not be released until 2012. The next iPhone will be called the iPhone 4G.

Until then, any self-respecting journalist should refer to it as "the fifth-generation iPhone."

Thank you, and seriously they are not going to make the jump to Iphone 5 for another generation after this one, that I think is still going to come out on time, with an A5 processor in June. I will be making the move from my 3Gs to the next gen as soon as it comes out. Btw I am not basing my knowledge of a summer Iphone release on the fact that apple has not let me down yet year after year of releasing Iphones early into the summer.

Your logic is flawed. Why would the 6th generation iPhone be called iPhone 5? Apple just got out of the naming sequence and looks like will be following a numerical sequence now. It would be stupid in a marketing aspect to go from iPhone 3G to iPhone 3, as customers would like to see additional things in the name, not the removal of a letter.
    iPad -> iPad 2, iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5.
It makes the most sense, and btw when people call it "iPhone 5" they're referring it as the 5th generation iPhone because it's a faster way of saying just that.

    iPhone = iPhone 1
    iPhone 3G = iPhone 2
    iPhone 3GS = iPhone 3
    iPhone 4 = iPhone 4
    iPhone 5 = iPhone 5

In regards to the OP. I'm very excited about the iPhone 5 now, it seems as though waiting for September will be worth it if we're to see a completely revamped iOS + A5 Dual Core CPU + Upgraded GPU + 4" screen + NFC + possible LTE upgradability.

The iPhone and iPhone 3G have kicked the can update-wise, now it's your turn iPhone 3GS.

The name "iPhone 4G" adds a letter, it doesn't remove one. It allows a 4G phone to be marketed as such, just as they did with the 3G.
