Ricky Ponting on Tuesday stood behind Adam Gilchrist, saying the former Australian wicketkeeper would not have meant to offend Sachin Tendulkar with his comments on the star Indian batsman’s role in the ‘monkeygate’.The Australian skipper denied that Gilchrist’s observations on Tendulkar would adversely affect the relationship between Indian and Australian cricketers. “I do not really think there was any malice intended from Adam in what he had to say in his book. I think it was reading between the lines the last couple of days, but he has actually contacted Sachin and cleared the air,” Ponting said.
Tendulkar had told a TV channel on Monday that “the remarks came from someone who does not know me enough.” He added that Gilchrist “made loose statements.”
But the master batsman preferred not to drag on the controversy. “That’s his opinion but as far as I am concerned the chapter is closed,” Tendulkar said.
