Northtown Students Excel at FCCLA STAR Event
Several students from North Kansas City High School participated in the Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STAR event Feb. 8. STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) are competitive events in which members are recognized for proficiency and achievement in chapter and individual projects, leadership skills, and career preparation.
Jimmy Huynh competed in “National Programs in Action,” receiving a gold ranking. The cooking team of Mallory McCutchan, Dakota Wilson, and Haley Hogue also received a gold rating and qualified for state competition.
Other results included Myrhon Gayyed who competed in “Recycle and Redesign” and received a silver ranking. Kim Nguyen competed in “Fashion Design” and also received a silver ranking. The cooking team of Nick Anderson, Shalynn Rodenberg, Michael Ly earned a silver ranking as well.
Staley Girls Win Conference Championship, Oak Park Places 4th
The Staley Girls Swim and Dive team won the Suburban Conference team title Saturday, Feb. 5, in convincing fashion. They outdistanced 2nd place Kearney by nearly 150 points, winning eight of the 12 events, setting six new conference records, and qualifying six individuals and two relays for the upcoming state championship. Individual qualifiers from Staley include:
Alyssa Powers (200 Individual Medley, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay)
Carley Bruscato (200 Freestyle, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay)
Samantha Shawver (50 Freestyle, 200 Medley Relay, 200 Free Relay)
Patti Hemmat (100 Backstroke, 200 Medley Relay)
Hannah Armato (100 Breaststroke)
Helen Bass (200 Free Relay)
The Oak Park Girls also had an impressive performance at the Suburban Conference meet, placing 4th and qualifying three individuals for the state meet. Individual qualifiers from Oak Park include:
Morgan Foxworthy (200 Individual Medley, 100 Breaststroke)
Laurel Bartholomew (Diving – Laurel earned All-American honors with her performance on Saturday)
Hannah Eisele-Miller (100 Backstroke)
Northtown Students Compete in DECA District Competition
On Tuesday, 22 students from North Kansas City High School participated in DECA District Competition. Christopher Phillips and Adam Liermann took 2nd in the International Business Plan event and will advance to state competition. Emily Jennings, Kelly Parman and Olivia Silvers took 1st place in the Entrepreneurship Written event with a score of 98 out of a possible 100, and will also represent Northtown in state competition. Their project was Twisted Mind Pretzel Shoppe.
