On Jan. 28, in the Falcon Fieldhouse, district rivals Staley and Oak Park met on the basketball court. On Staley’s side was a team of weathered seniors. On Oak Park’s, a team of young and eager juniors with something to prove. It was to be the match of the season.
From the very beginning, Oak Park took the lead, scoring 14 points in the first quarter, compared to Staley’s 13. By half, Staley was still only one point behind the Northmen with a score of 25 to 24. Fouls took their toll on the Falcons in the third quarter, allowing the Northmen to stretch the lead to 35-28. The final score for the game was 51-38 Oak Park.
It would be Oak Park’s David Wingerson who would lead the Northmen to victory. He attempted 17 shots, making 13, and scoring a total of 15 points for his team. Conversely, Ryan Parker was Staley’s top scorer, earning 14 points for the Falcons, followed by Evan Campbell and Vinny Delisio, who each earned 9 points.
It wasn’t for lack of trying on the Falcon’s side. Oak Park’s players were fantastic free throw shooters and spent their fouls wisely, sending Staley players to the line who struggled to sink the shot. Only one player on the Northmen’s side fouled out, compared to the two players on the Falcon’s side, one of which being their top scorer. Staley had 27 total fouls. Oak Park had 21.
