DISTRICT ACTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS

Football
The Staley Falcons overcame the Park Hill South Panthers in a football quarterfinal playoff game Saturday. With the 7-3 win, the Falcons advance to the state semifinal game. They will face Lee’s Summit West on Friday, Nov. 19 at the District Activity Complex beginning at 7 p.m.


Journalism
North Kansas City Schools high school journalism students participated in the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention held this past weekend at Bartle Hall. Of the 4,500 students in attendance at the convention, nearly 2,000 students participated in journalism competition. Awards included superior ratings, excellent ratings and honorable mention.

From North Kansas City High School, senior Lacey Brewer received an honorable mention for Yearbook Student Life Photography and senior Malaysia King received an honorable mention for Yearbook Cover/Endsheets Design. Both are editors of the Northtown yearbook, the Purgold.

Oak Park student journalists also earned awards at the national convention. Senior Derek Byrne earned an honorable mention for his photography portfolio. Senior Carly Evans earned an honorable mention for Yearbook Student Life Writing. Junior Caleb Eissler earned an honorable mention for Commentary Writing. For the first time in years, beginning journalism students from the Journalism I course were able to join the publications staffs during the competition. Freshman Jake Boeding earned an honorable mention for Sports Writing. Freshman Hannah Williams earned an excellent rating for News Writing.

Four Staley journalists were honored as well. Sam Watts earned a superior, the highest national award, for her Editorial Cartoon. Kathy Koerperich earned an honorable mention in Newspaper News/Feature Photography; Lindsay Koerperich earned an honorable mention in Commentary Writing; and Sloan Thomas earned an honorable mention in Newspaper Sports Photography.

Swim and Dive
The Staley Boys Swim and Dive team traveled to state competition this past weekend. They received All-State Honorable Mention awards for the 200 Medley Relay team of Ryan Lynn, Alex McIntyre, Daniel Gibson and Andy Herdman, and the 200 Free Relay team of Alex McIntyre, Jordan Milhon, David Maynard and Andy Herdman. Both relays swam to 13th place finishes at state. Alex McIntyre received All-State 1st Team recognition with his 3rd place finish in both the 200 Individual Medley (IM) and 100 Breaststroke.
