NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster

NASA Marks 25th Anniversary of the Challenger Disaster: According to the internet Media, NASA is remembering three major tragedies in its history this week, starting with the 25th anniversary of the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger on Friday.
"This year marks the 25th anniversary of the loss of the Challenger—a tragedy that caused us to completely rethink our systems and processes as we worked to make the shuttle safer," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in an AFP reportAlong with deputy administrator Lori Garver, Bolden honored the lives of those lost in Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia by laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia Thursday morning.
"The nation will never forget Jan. 28, 1986, nor its indelible images," Bolden added.
Challenger's entire crew was killed when the shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after its launch, 46,000 feet in the air. The explosion was broadcast on live television.

In 2003, a faulty heat shield caused Columbia to disintegrate as it re-entered the earth's atmosphere, killing seven astronauts. A fire aboard Apollo 1 proved fatal for the vessel's crew of three in 1967. This mission was the first of NASA's manned trips to the moon.
Since 1964, 24 people have been killed in a NASA mission, but NASA says it has learned since then.
"Safety is the number one priority at NASA and the shuttle launch schedule does not drive discussions or decisions when issues arise," a NASA spokesperson told PCMag. "That is reiterated often and is apparent in media events about the issues."
apollo 1 Perhaps the most telling example is the recent delays in the coming launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. The ship was originally set to take off on its final voyage on Nov. 1, but due to leaks, inclement weather, electrical issues, and equipment problems, the mission was delayed more than a half a dozen times. It's now scheduled to lift off Feb. 24.
"NASA has learned hard lessons from each of our tragedies, and they are lessons that we will continue to keep at the forefront of our work as we continuously strive for a culture of safety that will help us avoid our past mistakes and heed warnings while corrective measures are possible," Bolden said.
After Discovery, the shuttle Endeavor is supposed to launch in April 18, the AFP said. Additionally, if Congress hands over the necessary funds, NASA is hoping to send Space Shuttle Atlantis into orbit for an additional trip.

For the crowds attending the Sundance film festival, this could easily be one of the most arresting images they’ll see over the next ten days. Tao Gu’s short film On the Way to the Sea, one of the 14 Canadian films at Sundance, is a highly experimental work, drifting through the chaotic memories of survivors of the 2008 earthquake centred in Wenchuan, China.
Produced by Montreal’s Green Ground Productions, it’s the high-art side of Canada’s Sundance roster, while at the other extreme is Jason Eisener’s tongue-in-cheek exploitation feature Hobo With A Shotgun, about a homeless vigilante shooting down the bad guys.
Based on fake trailers within Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s film Grindhouse, the film has long been building word-of-mouth ahead of its showing at Sundance’s midnight program of films.

Veena wants Shiv Sena in Pak 'Bigg Boss' If Pakistani starlet Veena Malik had her way, she would pit former President Pervez Musharraf against the Shiv Sena in a Pakistani version of 'Bigg Boss', the reality show that brought her to the limelight.
Veena, who has taken on the mullah brigade for calling her "immoral" for her appearance on 'Bigg Boss', was asked in an interview about the contestants she would choose if Pakistan were to host the reality show.

Asked if she would repeat any contestant from 'Bigg Boss 4', she told 'The Express Tribune' newspaper, "Dolly Bindra. Even the very thought of this show is very funny. This could be hilarious."

Caleb Hanie's Pack mentality: According to the internet Media, Maybe it's a good thing that the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers only meet in the playoffs every 70 years. These two storied franchises apparently don't bring out the best in each other - at least not in January.

Each team played one strong half of football, just not the same half. The Packers took the first, the Bears the second, and when it was all over, Green Bay had a 21-14 victory, the NFC title and a trip to the Super Bowl to face the Pittsburgh Steelers.

But the Packers were nearly derailed by a 25-year-old quarterback out of Colorado State with three years of NFL experience, most of it holding a clipboard. Caleb Hanie came this close to being able to drink free in Chicago for life when he rallied the Bears to two fourth-quarter touchdowns and very nearly forced the game into overtime.
"You don't expect to play on a day like this, but that's how it goes sometimes," Hanie said.
Two interceptions, one for a touchdown by Green Bay nose tackle B.J. Raji - "one of those 'oops' type of things," Hanie said - the other on fourth and five with 47 seconds remaining, ended the Bears' hopes. Still, his performance - 13 of 20, 153 yards, a touchdown and a 65.2 rating - got him a lot of praise from both locker rooms. Hanie understood perfectly well just how unusual that is for a losing quarterback.
"Throw two picks," he said. "That's the only time you're going to get congratulations [for that], when they don't expect you to do anything."

This tragedy is still unfolding, and the questions of motive and incitement will be argued about for a long time to come.

But I am saying that the “lock and load”/”take up your arms” rhetoric of American politics isn’t just an overheated metaphor. For years, the language of sports has dominated political journalism, and discourse about hardball and the horserace and the rest of the macho athletic lexicon has been a factor in the trivialization of our public sphere. This has helped dumb down democracy, making a serious national discussion about anything important too wonky for words.

Polaroid’s New Gray Label Designed by Lady Gaga

Polaroid’s new Gray Label products were promoted by Lady Gaga during CES 2011. That was an excellent, headline making move on the part of the company.
Lady Gaga was actually tapped to be the Creative Director of the new Gray Label products. The new line consists of the GL10–a wireless photo printer, a GL30 instant camera that prints the picture just like an old school Polaroid, and GL20 sunglasses–which are most amazing, because they have two OLED screens and a camera
The GL10 will connect via Bluetooth or USB cable, and it will print pictures wirelessly from nearly any device. The new printer will hit the shelves in May and will cost about $149.
The updated retro inspired GL30 instant camera will print a picture as soon as you take it. Amazingly, Polaroid’s Zink technology makes the print without using ink. Another plus is that it can double as a photo frame. It should be available by next Christmas.

The GL20 sunglasses are obviously the cherry on top here with Polaroid’s new Gray Label line of products. You can actually take pictures while wearing the glasses.
