The Black Angels - Directions To See A Ghost

Directions to See a Ghost is the second album from Texas Psych Rockers The Black Angels. It was released digitally on April 15, 2008 by Light in the Attic Records. This certainly is a moving album. It's chock full of heavily verbed guitar coupled with driving drums and gritty bass that all but scream Velvet Underground influence. This comes as no surprise as the band's name is derived from the Underground's 'The Black Angel's Death Song.' Lead singer Alex Maas seems to tap into a bit o' the old Jim Morrison on the opening track 'You On The Run.' Give this album a good hard listen and, as always, if you like it, BUY IT!

Broadcast and The Focus Group

Broadcast and The Focus Group is super psychedelia, drips of color dropping from tearful eyes crying diamonds and little flakes of gold. Twisted up in knots of hair blown through the wind on a beach you can only remember through the eyes of yourself when you were a child.

The Wire magazine declared 'Broadcast and The Focus Group investigate Witch Cults of the Radio Age' Album of the Year, and for good reason. This album, rooted in jazzy ambiance and smothered in '60's rock/Velvet Underground-esque vocals truly is a pleasure on the ears.

Vampire Weekend

I was listening to 88.7fm aka Loyola University's college radio station [WLUW] today and heard this band and really liked them. I owe my soul to LU's college station because, despite being a fan of classic rock, they are literally one of the few stations I can actually tolerate in Chicago because almost every other station is classic rock (expect Nickleback every ten songs or so) or top 40.

Javelins!

Javelins are an indie band from Detroit. They offer up a really great sound. The songs are mellow, uplifting, depressing, and most importantly, accessible! The lyrics just mesh so perfectly with the way the vocalist delivers them. Their latest project 'Heavy Meadows' is on the way, and several shows are currently lined up. If you're in the Midwest, be sure to check these guys out.
