I hate flash. It's slow and resource intensive in OSX, don't know who to blame for that though, Apple or Adobe.

Please don't tell me that anyone that actually needs the CS apps can't plunk down $450-$1000 for the EDU version, but will shell out $3000 for an overpriced Mac Pro?
Students pay either less (edu-discount-not just in the U.S.) for their Mac, buy a refurbished model or buy a used Mac from the previous owner. In the best case, this reduces the price of a previous generation Mac to one third or even to 25 percent of the original price.

One thing I really hate about this Zune thing is the amount of free publicity Microsoft has gotten.
For months on end we've been bombarded with Zune-friendly "news" articles calling it an "iPod killer". Even before Microsoft had a name for it, before they had any sort of design for it, while it was still vaporware, the media kept hammering home, "iPod killer" while seeming to drool over the prospect.
There's STILL no actual product on the store shelves.
It's disgusting, really.

While for me, $500 is a "pretty big wad of cash to throw down", there's more to it than strictly looking at the dollar figure. EG. Do you have a kid or kids that might benefit from being able to use the new iPad you're about to purchase? Do you have legitimate uses for it that go along with EARNING more money, or maybe even the ability to write the whole purchase off as a tax deduction the next year? When you spend $20 on some beer or a few bucks on some food, it's a consumable you use once and throw some trash away, and then you have nothing to show for it.
One thing I know about myself is, I'm very hesitant to spend much on "instant gratification" type of entertainment. I practically never spend money on tickets for sporting events or concerts, and maybe buy a movie ticket once a year. I've often skipped summer vacations completely because my employer didn't want me to take time off when they had important projects going on, and I just opted to get paid for the days instead. I don't even have cable or satellite TV at home, because I hated watching $60 or more per month just vanish into thin air, with nothing concrete to show for it later. So when I do spend my money? It tends to be on bigger-ticket items I know I'll get a lot of use out of for years down the road.
So frankly, in my relationships, "respect" is just as much about my partner respecting my ability to make sensible purchasing decisions and NOT demand I consult with her first, simply because it's something a lot more expensive than a fast food order.
The basis for any good relationship is communication. And I am not sure what kind of money you make, but $500 is a pretty big wad of cash to throw down and it should merit a conversation with your spouse. Its not like you threw down a $1 on a cheeseburger, or $2 on a scratch off, or heck $20 of beer. You spent $500, thats like a whole months utilities. Thats a car payment. Thats a few hours of tuition for your kid's college one day. Its no chump change.
And household income should be considered just that, household. It does not matter who makes more money, it should be community, and if you're spending $500 on an iPad, then you're lady should be able to spend $500 on a coach purse. How would you feel about that?
Non-necessities, expensive purchases should always be discussed. There is a need for open, honest communication in a marriage. If you don't have that, and you are running around buying ipads without consulting them, well unless you got a fad wad of cash, you likely wont stay married long.
Its about respect. If you don't respect your wife enough to discuss a $500 purchase with her, then you don't deserve to have the companionship of a female.

Has anyone considered that apple might not be realeasing the wide screen super secret video ipod because it dosn't exist?
lets all think for a second...
1) touch screens are weak, soft, and matte, not iPod at all
2) they get printy and scratched very easily
3) they would go through oodles of batter power
4) Apple would not make the thing bigger just to hold the extra battery
5) battery life would STINK
6) touch screen starts to complicate the interface, goes against apple's easy as pie rule
7) the thing would have to cost a fortune

My bet is on Macbook pro update. with merom processor. maybe even a new form.

Why such a great camera on the iphone and such loser ones on the ipad?
The iPad uses its camera's mainly for Facetime and Photobooth. Video quality isn't impacted by megapixels, like on a camera. In fact, megapixels aren't even that important on a camera (!). The quality of the lens and the software that's taking the picture are FAR more important than megapixels. Megapixel count is a marketing term to sell new products. We always said that if Apple's arbitrary, inconsistent, and quite frankly baffling approval process didn't get straightened out soon, the defections were going to pick up pace -- and what do we have here? Joe Hewitt, the developer of the well-loved and highly regarded Facebook iPhone app, has flipped the script and rejected the App Store. And, as you'd expect, our man is not mincing his words, stating that his "decision to stop iPhone development has had everything to do with Apple's policies," and that he's "philosophically opposed to the existence of their review process." While Hewitt can't comment on specific future projects (he's still at Facebook, but the app itself has been handed off to another developer) he has mentioned that he'll be devoting his time to web development for mobile devices. As you know, there is no approval process for the world wide web (which is apparent if you've spent any time on Geocities back in the day). The MacBook doesn't need a Core 2 Duo processor. Apple needs to leave a gap between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro.
There's still quite a big difference between the MB and the MBP even if they both have C2D processors.
CPU speed isn't the only thing to care about you know.

I haven't read the whole thread, but will throw in my two cents on the original topic. I think it's fair for MS to charge considerably more for an OS that represents a few years of work than Apple charges for their yearly OS. I prefer Apple's, and I buy each new Apple OS as it comes out, but I still think it's not fair to compare cost straight away. Microsoft's multi-level charging does seem a bit extreme though.

I just cancelled my MacBook+iPod-order... The folks at Apple couldn't say if the back to school-offer would still be valid if I switched iPods so I'm placing a new order on Tuesday so I can save 200 bucks on the iPod :)

When you study harmony, who are you going to study the most? Bach
When you study Music History of the Baroque era, who is going to take the biggest part of the semester? Bach.
When you study Harpsichord or organ, who is the biggest composer you are going to study? Bach. Even when you do piano, you are going to study Bach at leas at the beginning before your Liszt and Rachmaninoff.
I know they teach popular music at universities. The course on popular is music is optional. My wife took a course on popular music at Montreal university. They studied the Beatles for about 20 minutes of the whole semester. I did my bachelor's in the USA, my master's in Paris, DEM in Paris and my doctorate at Montreal. I know 20 is minutes is the most the Beatles are going to get. That's how important they are to music history. Perhaps, they are important in popular music.
You think you know about music, but your knowledge is very limited. It is just plain ridiculous to compare them to Bach.
How about if you don't study these things, but just enjoy them for what they are.

Get a grip? I don't care if you are a Demi-god that is pretty freakin rude. Considering the Apple owns much of the flash market and the competition already sells higher capacities at lower prices I would say they are making plenty of profit. Not offering student discounts like they have in the past is just pure greed. College students provide plenty of free marketing for them and help increase their cool factor and college students are poor. They should get a break.
