District Activity Highlights

Football
The weather was a huge player in this week’s Friday night football games. Despite home games beginning at 5:30 p.m., games were postponed due to lightning and heavy rains.

North Kansas City High School played Lee's Summit West in football Friday night. After three quarters of play, the game was postponed due to weather. The two teams returned to action Saturday with the Hornets losing 21-6. Notable play came from quarterback Zack Benintende who had 170 passing yards and one touchdown toss. Nick Stockdale (WR) had three catches for 68 yards. Ethan McFadden had two carries and scored the touchdown for the Hornets.

Oak Park traveled to Grandview, earning a road victory with a 39-20 win.

Staley began play Friday night, storming to a 31-0 lead over their Platte Co. opponent. Weather postponed the conclusion of the game until Monday. The Falcons took the win by a score of 31-3.

Winnetonka took to the field on Saturday in Belton. The away game didn’t faze the Griffins who defeated Belton 21-9.

Girls Golf
North Kansas City Girls Golf took to the links against Fort Osage this week, winning the match-up. Northtown’s team total was 167. The Fort Osage total was 173. Kala Chinnaswamy had a score of 55. Stephanie Grote shot a 50. Megan Hill shot 62. Corrie Gibson was 66 and Lindsey O’Brien was 64.

Soccer
Oak Park had a successful week, recording two wins and a loss. The loss came on Sept. 7 against Park Hill by a score of 3-0. On Sept. 9, the Northmen played William Chrisman winning 3-0. Ray Saari put two in the net. Maci Milic also scored. Oak Park played Staley on Sept. 14 with a 2-0 win over the Falcons. Goals came from sophomores Kit Russell and Pierre Francois. Goalkeepers Matt Ebinger and Andrew Fishel earned the shutout.

Staley suffered their first loss of the season Sept. 9 against Lee’s Summit in a 3-0 shutout for the Falcons.

Softball
North Kansas City played Park Hill Sept. 13. The team lost 9-0. Freshmen Maggie Brooks and Samantha Reed both singled for the Hornets.

The Winnetonka Softball team came to the plate Sept. 13 against Belton. Despite the effort of several diving catches, the Lady Griffins ended the game with a 6-1 loss.

Swim/Dive
North Kansas City participated in the Independence Invitation Sept. 10-11, placing 7th out of 19 teams including Blue Springs, Park Hill, Blue Springs South and Liberty. The 200 Free Relay took 3rd place with a team of Hunter Schmitt, Bryce Reed, Griffin Schmitt and Nick Malvagna. Sophomore Hunter Schmitt took 8th in both the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. Junior Griffin Schmitt took 4th in the 200 Free. Senior Nick Malvagna took 7th in the 50 Free and 5th in the 100 Free. Senior Carson Light placed 9th in diving.

The Staley boys swim and dive team participated in the Springfield Invitational Sept. 10-11. They finished 7th out of 24 teams. After the first two weeks of competition, several boys have qualified for state competition. Brandon Moss qualified in diving. Nathaniel Vawter qualified in the 100 Breastroke. Alex McIntyre qualified in 50 Free, 100 Back, 100 Fly, 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke. Staley also qualified its 200 Medley Relay for state with a team of Ryan Lynn, Nathaniel Vawter, Alex McIntyre and Andy Herdman.

Tennis
The North Kansas City Girls Varsity Tennis team took 1st place last weekend at the Winnetonka Invitational. Katy Lehenbauer took 1st in the A-Singles flight. Sara Tuncten placed 3rd in the B-Singles flight. Andrea Johnson and Emily Ngo took 1st in the A-Doubles flight, and Kim Nguyen and Ariana Fakeri took 1st in the B-Doubles flight. Varsity is 1-3 on the season. Sara Tuncten won her 75th career victory, putting her in the “Top 10” in school history. Katy Lehenbauer reached 131 wins this past week. The Varsity squad has a combined GPA of 4.092. As a full team (25 girls), Northtown has a GPA of 4.007.

In their first conference match-up of the season, the Staley Girls Tennis team defeated Liberty North! Varsity won 8-1 and JV won 9-0.
